Is a Movie a Good First Date or the Worst Idea Ever?

Everyone loves movies. Everyone feels good after a good movie. So, movies must be a great idea for a first date, right? Not so fast. Just because something is a fun activity doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s a great idea for a first date.

Great first date ideas need to meet a lot of criteria to be good ideas. They have to be simple enough to connect, conducive to connection, safe enough to make everyone comfortable, and yes, still fun.

With the criteria set, let’s break down whether or not a movie is a good first date or not.

Here’s the reality of movie first dates.

Let’s walk through our criteria one at a time.

  • Is a movie simple enough to connect? Yes, movies are pretty simple.
  • Are movies conducive to connection? No, you’re not supposed to talk at all during a movie.
  • Is a movie safe enough to make everyone feel comfortable? Maybe, although the darkness of the theater may make some people uncomfortable.
  • Are movies fun? Yes, they are fun.

Based solely on the fact that movies are not conducive to connection, movies are a bad first date idea.

The entire purpose of a first date is to identify if there is enough chemistry and connection to warrant a second date. If you can’t even have a conversation outside of a few words before and after the movie, how are you going to achieve that? The answer is you won’t.

While we love movies and think they can make for good dates later on with someone you’re already connected with, they’re pretty lousy first dates.

There are better options.
