National Couples Day – When, Where, and Why

Finding unique opportunities to celebrate your love is always exciting. One of the most popular holidays to do this with that happens every year is National Couples Day. While the origin of the holiday is a little shrouded in debate, it’s still a perfect time for you and your special someone to connect.

Today, we’re going to share exactly when National Couples Day is happening this year, how you can make sure you don’t miss it, and a few ways to celebrate. We’ll also talk about where it came from (depending on who you ask) and give a definitive new answer on that.

National Couples Day is on August 18th, 2026.

National Couples Day happens annually on August 18th. Unlike some holidays that move around each year (like how Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday in November), National Couples Day is on August 18th no matter what day of the week that is.

This year, that’s a Monday, so you’ll probably want to look to celebrate the weekend before or the weekend after.

What is National Couples Day?

National Couples Day is a holiday celebrated in the U.S. where couples (dating, engaged, and married) take some time to appreciate, acknowledge, and celebrate their love for each other.

While it’s not a Federal holiday or anything like that (no relationship holidays are), it’s still one that has wild amounts of popularity. In fact, the holiday is searched over 100,000 times a month, mainly by people trying to figure out when it is and where it came from.

The Origins of National Couples Day

As we alluded to earlier, the actual origin of National Couples Day is a little bit of a debate. Here are a few of the theories and what we believe the most probable origin should be.

2010

The first theory is that the holiday was founded in 2010 when a company in the U.S. created the holiday to celebrate couples (and get them to buy more stuff). While this sounds like a probable founding story, there are zero reports that name the company or talk about the product. If this was such a big campaign that created a national holiday, you’d think there would be a track record of it.

2020

The second theory is that National Couples Day was established in 2020 to recognize the importance of healthy relationships. While we wholeheartedly support this cause, again, there are no mentions of what organization founded the holiday or any traces of the promotion.

What We Think

In reality, it’s pretty strange that there are no origin stories or track records of the founding of National Couples Day. This leads us to believe it was started unofficially and more than likely not in line with a major company or major organization. This means the holiday still needs the help of mainstream recognition to “be a real holiday”.

With that said, we at LoveTrack would like to officially announce the founding of National Couples Day in 2025. While we certainly don’t take credit for the original idea, it’s time to legitimize the holiday and give it the track record of existence it deserves.

In light of that, let’s agree that today the people of the world in partnership with the LoveTrack couples app are the official founders of National Couples Day dated 2025.

That was fun, right?
