National Wife Day and Wife Appreciation Day are the same thing.

The first thing worth pointing out is that National Wife Day actually goes by two names.

National Wife Day is also called Wife Appreciation Day and they are the exact same holiday.

National Wife Day is the more popular name, but just be aware that they are one in the same. The holiday is NOT the same as National Future Wife Day, though, which happens on a different day.

National Wife Day is the third Sunday of September.

Where Did National Wife Day Come From

Nearly 1,200 years ago, ancient…just kidding. National Wife Day does not have ancient roots or a storied past of where it came from. In fact, there is no official documentation or formal recognition of when the holiday was invented or how.

Like most romantic holidays, its formation just kind of ‘happened’. It first showed itself in the early 2000’s and gained popularity through social media, online calendar websites, and gift and greeting card companies pumping it up.

So, where do we think Wife Appreciation Day came from? More than likely, and much like other similar romantic holidays, it probably came from corporate America. Most likely executives created the holiday as a way to sell gifts, greeting cards, flowers, chocolates, and more.

Yes, that’s not a very romantic origin, but it doesn’t mean it wasn’t a great idea. We support any opportunity (even with commercialized roots) to celebrate the special woman in our lives.

How to Celebrate National Wife Day

As the holiday isn’t a formal one, there are also no formal guidelines on how you’re supposed to celebrate. It really is up to you on what you do. The only “rule” per say is that the goal of the holiday is to make your wife feel seen, feel special, and feel appreciated. There’s a reason the secondary name of the holiday is literally Wife Appreciation Day.

That said, here is some guidance on best practices to celebrate.

  • Treat it like Valentine’s Day. – If you need the simplest of guidance, here it is. Treat National Wife Day like it’s Valentine’s Day. Whatever you normally do to celebrate for Valentine’s Day will be perfect for this holiday.
  • Help her relax by taking on her tasks. – Chances are your wife carries a lot of the weight for the family and around the house when it comes to things like work, chores, tasks, etc. While you can’t go to work for her, you can help with alleviating some of her around-the-house burdens. If there is a task or chore she normally does, do it for her!
  • Flowers and chocolates are always accepted. – It probably goes without saying that flowers and chocolates are great gifts for Wife Appreciation Day, but we wanted to say it just in case. These gifts are fantastic tangible ways to say, ‘I see you and I appreciate you’.
  • Give her quality, distraction free time together. – Planning a special activity or a date night idea together is a great idea to celebrate. But just make sure that whatever you do (even if it’s simple) that you put your phone away and get rid of any other distractions that you can. The more she feels like you’re focused on her, the more appreciated she’s going to feel. Spoiler, distraction free time is also a big relationship goal that you should consider doing all the time!
  • Share out loud or in a note why you appreciate her. – Lastly, make sure you actually tell her that you appreciate her (and why). Too often, people assume their wife knows how much they mean to them. In reality, these are things that are never said enough. Don’t assume, be proactive. You can tell her all of this or you can write it into a nice letter to share with her.
